“MATTER IS MOTHER”

A NEW SOLO SHOW WRITTEN AND PERFORMED

BY JULIA BRAY

"Matter is Mother" is a one-woman magical comedy that explores the parallels between the way we treat the earth and possessions with the ways in which we treat the forgotten feminine within all bodies. In this 80-minute show, Julia Bray plays 8 different characters at an all-inclusive resort called Paradise, where plastic is piling higher by the minute, and a sea monster made of garbage threatens guests vacation by eating them, forcing a sometimes funny, often painful, and ultimately transformative reckoning with their relationship to the feminine-- their feelings, emotions and lives.

Through a darkly comedic but heartfelt narrative backed by original song, choreography and visuals, this show invites the audience to consider how healing our relationship to our emotional pain could topple the systems of injustice, and help the planet thrive. By diving headfirst into the intersections of capitalism, patriarchy and the climate crisis this inspirational show was highly praised by Broadway World, who called it " an intelligent and creative look at a global problem that becomes more pressing every day - and it points us toward a solution. It needs to be seen."

On September 25, 2020, Julia and a small team of socially-distanced and masked creatives in NW Portland set out to film a live-streamed version of her new play “Matter Is Mother”. It was a wild experience with no live audience, one woman, 8 different wigs, 3 cameras, and one mustache that insisted on falling off.
